1 - ECONOMIC WEIGHT OF THE FIELD
By January 1st 2003, the textile-garnment sector count on the national level 114396 companies and around 475 127 wage-earners.
The industry, taking every branch into account represents 19.5% of companies and gathers half wage earning activity of this sector.
An estimate of minimal global employment of this sector can be proposed including wage earning employment, the company director in the company where there is not wage earner: thus we count 420198 independent jobs (companies which don’t employ wage earner in France) that represents the same number of no wage earner jobs. Indeed, a number of firms which employs wage earner, the company director is not on the payroll and he is not considered among the wage earner.
On the other hand it is not possible to estimate this number. It’s why the estimate is minimum. The national global employment (wage earner + independent no wage earner of this sector) is 5 17 325.
The Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region gathers 10% of the national companies (24 543 jobs)and 5,2% of the wage-earners of the field (24 543 jobs).
Thus it is :
- on the third rank for its companies number, behind L’Ile de France and Rhône Alpes and in front of the Nord Pas de Calais region ;
- on the fifth rank for the wage earner number ;
- it gathers 1.9% of industry jobs which ranks fifteenth rank of French region for wage earner employment of textile and garment.
Because of the important number of independent and small sized companies in PACA, the PACA global employment is estimated at 29 153 which represents 5.6% of the national employment of the sector (estimat according to the rules implemented on the national level: companies without wage earner employ one people who is no wage earner).
